BLOOMINGTON – It appears no one will challenge McLean County State’s Attorney Don Knapp in next year’s election.

Monday was the deadline to file nominating petitions for candidates, and Knapp was the only person to file the required paperwork for his name to placed on the ballot.

Knapp is a Republican. County Board Chairman John McIntyre appointed him in August of last year to replace Jason Chambers, who became a circuit judge.

It was a goal of McLean County Democratic Party Chair Erik Rankin to run a full slate of Democrats for all county-wide offices. Rankin is challenging Republican incumbent Don Everhart for circuit clerk, while Democrat Abbi Sorrrells is running against Republican incumbent Kathy Yoder for McLean County Coroner.

There’s a crowded field of candidates for McLean County Auditor. Incumbent Michelle Anderson filed nominating petitions on the Republican side. She’s opposed in the March 17 GOP primary by Trisha Malott, who has the support of Republican leaders including McIntrye, Knapp, Sheriff Jon Sandage, and County Clerk Kathy Michael.

Democrat Robert Fazzini and Libertarian Kevin Woodard are also running for the auditor’s post.

Barring a petition challenge, there will be a primary on the Republican side to replace retiring County Board member William Caisley in District 4, which includes northwest Normal. Steve Harsh of Normal filed petition signatures Monday for his name to be placed on the March primary ballot to face Adelita Cruz, who has Caisley’s endorsement.

The only Democrat in District 4 is Benjamin Webb, who lost last year to Dan Brady for the State Representative’s seat in the 105th Legislative District.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
