BLOOMINGTON – A former McLean County business owner has been honored for his service and compassion for others.

Elmo Quinn of Bloomington is the recipient of this year’s WJBC Don Munson Spirit of McLean County Award. The annual award was presented Thursday during the American Red Cross Saluting Our Heroes breakfast.

“Anyone who knows Elmo knows what an amazing human he is,” said award presenter and WJBC News Director Katherine Murphy.  “He is a great dad, husband, grandfather, and he is an amazing friend.”

Now retired, Quinn owned and operated Quinn’s Shell Station on Main Street, one of the last full-service stations in Illinois.  Known for his kindness and friendliness, some have dubbed him the “Mayor of Main Street.”

Quinn has always been active in the community, currently offering his time each week at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen, and St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry.

“I want to thank McLean County, Bloomington-Normal, and especially Don Munson who is one of my great friends from way back,” said Quinn.

The Red Cross handed out nine awards at its annual event.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
