BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington Mayor Tari Renner has cancelled tonight’s special city council meeting on a proposed welcoming city ordinance, citing a lack of council support for the measure.
Several community groups that make up the Keep Families Together Campaign announced they would not support the resolution because it would “not take any meaningful action to limit collaboration” between police and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.
A statement from Renner says he’s calling on Police Chief Clay Wheeler to develop detailed policies and procedures about the department’s interactions with ICE, emphasizing concerns of individuals who may fear reporting crimes. The mayor also recommends the recently-formed Public Safety and Community Relations Board as well as faith communities and social justice organizations assist in making those policies known in the community.
Renner also issued a proclamation calling upon the people of Bloomington to build a stronger, unified community, which he says “embodies the spirit of our vibrant and diverse city.”
The city’s statement said future council meetings on the topic are not anticipated.
The council plans to hold its regular meeting at 7 p.m.
