BLOOMINGTON – The McLean County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents to be wary of phone scams that are popping up around the community.

Scammers are reportedly identifying themselves as police officers and telling potential victims they have warrants out for them for missing Jury Duty. The scammers are asking people for pre-paid gift cards from Kroger or Casey’s General Stores.

Another phone scam going around is a person calling and pretending to be with the Internal Revenue Service. Scammers are asking people for money, telling the victims there has been a fraud on their tax returns. The scammers have also reportedly threatened residents by saying they have a warrant for their arrest.

Sergeant Jody May said the Sheriff’s Office will not contact any person by phone in reference to active warrants. Residents are advised to hang up the phone if they receive a call like those.

The numbers reported in the scams are (309) 603-2238, (217) 622-7222, and (607) 542-4683.

Information on the scams can also be found on the McLean County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page.

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
