NORMAL – Special Olympians gathering Friday night at Illinois State University’s Hancock Stadium were experiencing the thrill of victory even before their competitions.
This is the 50th year for the Special Olympics, and athlete and Special Olympics board member Kaylee McLaughlin said the state summer games are a blast.
“We all have stories and our favorite parts, but I’m telling you, we all love this weekend!”
Jenny Fortner wanted to share her Volunteer of the Year honor with all who are involved in Special Olympics.
“You all have taught me over the last number of years, probably 25 now that I’ve been a volunteer, what it means to welcome all, to celebrate differences, and to love unconditionally,” Fortner said.
Board Chair Karen Atwood finds incredible joy and inspiration from the people who take part.
“Because of you, the staff, the families, the volunteers, and most importantly the athletes, I know I’m a much better person for having the athletes in my life. I also know if we all choose to include, the world would be a better place,” said Atwood.
Police officers who raise money and participate in the law enforcement torch run received a big cheer.
This year’s games come with important advise. Everyone needs to stay hydrated because of the hot weather.
The Special Olympics Summer Games run through Sunday at several Bloomington-Normal locations.
