One of a dozen opioid-related deaths in McLean County so far this year has led to a criminal charge of drug-induced homicide against a Champaign County man.
Troy McBride, 24, of Rantoul faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of the Class X felony for allegedly supplying James Dingman, 41, with painkilling fentanyl and heroin, causing Dingman’s death in March at a Bloomington apartment. At a court hearing Thursday afternoon, prosecutor Jeff Horve said one of Dingman’s relatives indicated he wants to deliver a victim’s impact statement.
McBride is also charged with six other counts, including delivery of fentanyl and heroin, and possession of crack cocaine with intent to deliver.
A statewide grand jury, meeting in Lee County, handed up the indictments against McBride, who’s being held on $1 million bond.
This is the second case of a drug-induced homicide filed in McLean County Court. Judge Scott Drazewski last September sentenced Jeremy Miller, 29, to 14 years in prison for the death of Marie Ann Lavallee in August of 2016.
McLean County Coroner Kathy Davis said she’s investigated 12 opioid overdoses so far this year, from seven during the same period a year ago, and 29 during all of last year.
