SPRINGFIELD – The annual Wall of Remembrance display honoring fallen soldiers is now open at the state capitol.
Senate Republicans put on the display, now in its fourth year. It includes a large television screen with the names and stories of soldiers killed in the line of duty.
Gov. Bruce Rauner says visitors can add their own notes of gratitude to the wall.
“We encourage everyone in the State of Illinois who can to stop by the capitol to sign a note, to put a picture, to pin a letter, honoring your loved ones, honoring the veterans, our heroes, who have defended our freedom for the past 200 years,” Gov. Rauner said during the wall’s opening ceremony.
“These heroes we honor here today gave their service and their lives to provide hope for our nation, our world and mankind,” Illinois Army National Guard Colonel Joseph Schweikert said during the opening. “We honor that hope when we work to make their hopes reality. For as long as this wall exists, for as long as there are memorial events like this, these heroes will be remembered. Their honor will be preserved in the way that only this great nation honors its heroes.”
The display is open to the public during the capitol’s normal business hours through July 4.
