BLOOMINGTON – As part of national volunteer week State Farm conducted a study to determine the characteristics of volunteers.

The survey of 3,100 Americans age 18 and older found millennials are volunteering the most.

“This is very exciting to see the impact that people are having on the community,” said State Farm Public Affairs’ Kim Kaufman . “To know that millennials are giving back as well as other generations.”

The survey asked what motivates people to volunteer.

Kaufman said career development, nearby opportunities and making an impact in the community were found to be a few of the motivating factors.

“We’re always trying to find out what motivates people to want to do something or want to give back. Well goodness, look at volunteerism as a wonderful way to say you’re not getting paid for this but there’s so much more,” said Kaufman.

Kaufman also says millennials make up 69 percent of volunteers.

“Being a millennial myself I find it very encouraging to know that we’re getting involved, we’re giving back to the community. We’re passing on the torch.”

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
