Man dead, deputy injured in shooting in rural Mackinaw

MACKINAW – One person is dead and a sheriff’s deputy hospitalized after a Friday morning shooting near Mackinaw.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said the 18-year-old male from rural Mackinaw died at 10:40 a.m. at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. His name has not been released.

The sheriff’s office was called to the scene on Illinois Route 9 about three miles east of Mackinaw just before 10 a.m. for a report of a suicidal male.

Tazewell County Chief Deputy Jeff Lower said when his crews arrived on scene, the man came toward them with a gun and shot at them. One or more of the deputies returned fire, hitting the man.

One deputy was hit by the gunfire and transported to UnityPoint Health Methodist Hospital for treatment.

Illinois State Police is handling the investigation.
