NORMAL – Unit 5 is increasing the number of buses in the school district’s fleet.

The Unit 5 school board approved the purchase of two, 34 passenger wheelchair accessible buses at last night’s meeting. Superintendent Mark Daniel said the district needs to have a certain number of buses in its arsenal to get students to and from school safely.

“It’s mandatory that you have ten percent more than the actual runs that you have, so we’re fulfilling our obligation of having buses that are ready to hit the road, that are safe, and so forth,” Daniel explained.

Unit 5 currently has 145 buses in its fleet. The school board will examine the possibility of purchasing more buses in upcoming meetings.

After several middle school and high school students asked the school district to recognize Indigenous People’s Day, the board is taking steps to fulfill students’ wishes while following the law.

While state law requires schools honor Columbus Day, the district can assign Indigenous People’s Day as a commemorative holiday on any other day in the school calendar. As for getting the law changed, Superintendent Mark Daniel says the board can point students in the direction of lawmakers.

“We do teach students how to follow a democratic process: express yourself appropriately, express that here are all views, then it’s up to that individual student to make a decision just like we would have our adults do.”

Board members indicated they would want students in school on Indigenous People’s Day to learn about Native  American history and culture, rather than having a day off.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
