BLOOMINGTON – Mourners paid tribute to Bloomington murder victim Nicole Elbert Thursday night, including her family.
About 50 people attended the candlelight vigil at Franklin Park intended to also raise awareness about domestic violence and child abuse.
A grand jury this week indicted Monroe Elbert, 50, on charges he fatally stabbed his 30-year old wife in their apartment on N. McLean St. He’s also charged with aggravated battery for injuries his eight-year old stepson suffered last year. Authorities say Elbert has confessed to both crimes.
“Together, we struggle to understand why. We wrestle with all the ‘what ifs’ and together we wonder if we can ever find forgiveness said Nicole’s uncle, Aaron Stine, who’s also pastor of Bloomington’s New Beginnings Church of God.
Nicole’s mother, Melissa Pendley, urged domestic violence victims to get out of their troubled relationships.
“No matter how threatening it is, or whatever, get help,” said Pendley.
“There’s somebody out there that will help you. You’ve just got to go for it,” Pendley also said.
Pendley remembers her daughter as a good person, a good mother, good friend, good daughter, and good wife, who would do anything for anybody.
