LINCOLN – The National Weather Service has canceled its Winter Weather Advisory for McLean County and much of Central Illinois but a fresh coating of snow coupled with temperatures hovering close to freezing are making some potentially hazardous road conditions.

A number of local schools and programs have canceled for Monday. Find the latest cancellations here and Illinois road conditions here.

Bloomington and Normal Police say primary roads are mostly clear of snow and ice while some rural roads are still at least partially ice covered.|

The McLean County Sheriff’s Department has a collision alert in place until further notice. Drivers involved in a crash in which there are no injuries and vehicles are driveable, they won’t have to report the crash to police until a time to be determined later.

The Illinois Department of Transportation reports most primary roads in McLean County are partially covered with snow and ice while roads in western and southern McLean County are mostly snow and ice covered.

Mark Leake, maintenance foreman with the McLean County Highway Garage said the 364 miles of county roads which the department treats should be in good shape in time for the morning commute.

“(Drivers) might find some of the township roads a little slick at first and some of our non-salted roads maybe a little slick, but I think they’ll be fine,” Leake said.

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing with a high of 35 degrees with patchy fog and an overnight low of 21.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
