BLOOMINGTON – In the wake of rising cyber attacks around the globe, the McLean County Board is looking to upgrade the county’s cyber security.

The board agreed to work with the Illinois State Terrorism and Intelligence Center to revamp the county’s security. Board Chairman John McIntyre explains as the world becomes more tech-savvy, the county can’t be left in the past.

“This is pretty much a statewide and national endeavor,” McIntyre explained. “So we want to be sure we’ve contracted the proper organizations to provide us with the security we need.”

McIntyre said Homeland Security has sent out notices to government agencies, recommending an increase cyber security of local governments.

The board also approved a request to seek out proposals for a consultant to review the McLean County Nursing Home. Nursing homes have been seeing a decline in revenue and patients, and the County Nursing Home is no exception. The facility has undergone difficult financial times in recent months, which has called into question the future of the nursing home.

McIntyre explained the board wants to conduct a thorough inspection of the facility and how funds can be spent before any decision is made on what to do with the building.

“We want to do a proper analysis of the nursing home and see if there’s any proposals for restructuring within the interior of our system that could help solve that issue,” McIntyre said.

It’s unclear if a new facility will be built at some point down the road, as a project is currently underway to expand and renovate the county jail.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
