ATLANTA – Illinois State Police are trying to figure out who threw a rock the size of a bowling ball off an Interstate 55 overpass in Logan County early Monday morning, smashing through the roof of a vehicle just outside Atlanta and nearly hitting two people inside.
The rock weighed nearly 10 pounds.
Police issued a stern warning about the incident, saying punishment can include felony charges and incarceration.
“No one has the right to endanger others by committing senseless acts such as throwing items from overpasses,” ISP District 9 Commander Chris Owen said. “The Illinois State Police takes these incidents very seriously and is actively working to identify the offender or offenders.
“It’s simple, how much do you trust those you were with? There is a good chance someone will come forward and oftentimes, that can be very beneficial for the person who confesses first or provides information.”
Anyone with information is encouraged to call State Police at (217) 786-6677.
