If the quote, “Good shoes take you good places…” is true, hundreds of people have an interesting journey ahead thanks to a central Illinois shoe drive; which is already being considered wildly successful.

The physical therapy team at OSF Healthcare Saint James in Pontiac collected new or gently used shoes through October and the result surprised organizers, in a good way, bringing in many more pairs than anticipated.

St. James Community Relations Coordinator Pam Meiner says they didn’t set an official goal beforehand, but when the final count came up to 450 pairs, it reinforced how giving people are in central Illinois.

“We were astounded. Just astounded. Overwhelmed, in a good way. The generosity of the community and our fellow OSF mission partners, they really turned out for those in need,” said Meiner. “And then when members of the team started to call organizations here in town, and ask them if they would like some shoes; the eager response they recieved from those organizations, just confirmed for them once again that they had done a wonderful thing. That truly would impact people in our community especially with the winter months coming up.”

Places getting shoes inlcude: the Hope Pregnancy Center, Livingston County Health Department, the Salvation Army and the St. Vincent De Paul Pantry in the Pontiac area.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
