SPRINGFIELD – Billions of unappropriated spending was going on last fiscal year and lawmakers and the public just found out about it.
Last week more than $2.8 billion in new unpaid bills showed up on the state’s ledger. That revelation had Comptroller Susanna Mendoza upset at the ability of Gov. Bruce Rauner and the current administration to hide extra spending during the budget crisis.
After a stinging rebuke on the spending and a veto override on a debt transparency bill Rauner fired back at the comptroller.
“Comptroller Mendoza criticizing an unbalanced budget that the Dems passed and that she was worked on it like a bank rober calling the police and saying we’ve got a problem,” Rauner said.
Mendoza said in a statement that Rauner still needs to provide full details about when he knew about the unappropriated spending of $2.8 billion and what his plan is for taking care of it.
