NORMAL – Illinois State University Police said Tuesday night’s shooting near the intersection of E. Vernon Ave. and S. Linden St. in Normal was not a random event targeting students, and the man apparently wounded in the shooting was not an ISU student.

ISU Police issued a statement on its Facebook page Wednesday night, about 24 hours after gunfire caused students to worry for their safety.

The university’s police force said the shooting is not believed to be a random act.  It was intentional, police said, and specific to a residence in the 600 block of S. Linden.

Officers found several bullet holes in a residence there and a number of bullet casings outside.

A man, who told officers he was walking in the area, was treated and released from OSF St. Joseph Medical Center for a gunshot wound to the neck.

Normal Police continue to investigate the shooting.

ISU Police are trying to quash rumors that another shooting happened Tuesday night in the area of Willow St. in Normal.

The university police said they notify the campus community of “ongoing credible threats” using ISU’s Emergency Alert system.

Police said situations that do not pose an immediate safety threat are shared through crime advisories or social media channels.
