HUDSON – For the second time in five months, the Village of Hudson finds itself embroiled in controversy.
Community members packed the village board room Tuesday night voicing support for a former Hudson Police officer who they say was fired because she became pregnant.
Former officer Kayley Sprout’s supporters handed board members a petition with more than 1,400 signatures, asking them to reinstate Sprout.
Board members didn’t comment, but previously said that having an officer who couldn’t perform her duties on such a small force would put undue burden on the town.
One of Sprout’s supporters, Cheryl Raidout, told our news partner, WMBD-TV, the truth will come out.
“I think it’s wrong. There might be more to it. If it is, then we’ll know about that too. But, one way or the other, the truth will set you free,” she said.
“The right thing will be done. We are a country of laws and it’s just that simple,” Raidout added.
Village Board members hired a team of lawyers to represent them in any legal proceedings on the matter.
In May, the mayor who had just been elected to the job resigned only a day after taking the oath, but he denied his departure had anything to do with a disagreement on how to run the police department.
Hudson, with a population of almost 1,900, is well-known for having an unusually large number of police officers, firefighters, and correctional officers living there.
