NORMAL – Heartland Community College passed a balanced budget Tuesday night.
It’s the first budget passed since the end of the states’ budget crisis. While guaranteed funding from the state is an improvement, the college still has some uncertainty in the future.
The budget has about $32 million in total revenue for FY18. With funding from the state, Heartland is looking to increase professional development and work on some capitol improvements.
But school leaders say they’re planning for the future with caution.
“The July resolution of the state budget impasse significantly reduces the uncertainty this year, and we emphasis this year. How do we know that what we’ve experienced the last two years won’t repeat itself in the future,” explained Doug Minter, Vice President of Business Services.
Even with the state budget in place, the school is still looking at losses in revenue next school year. Officials say they are working on cutting costs in preparation for the loss.
