WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., is taking a preemptive strike against President Donald Trump’s expected move to terminate a program that protects young immigrants from deportation.
The Trump administration is expected to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program after a six-month delay.
Duckworth issued a statement calling the move ‘heartless and irresponsible.’
“DREAMers and DACA recipients are doctors and teachers, students and servicemembers,” Duckworth said. “They have mortgages and jobs. They know only one country: The United States of America, which is where they were raised.”
Duckworth said since President Barack Obama enacted DACA five years ago, more than 700-thousand Americans and DACA recipients have been able to more fully contribute to the country they love.
Duckworth is calling on Congress to act immediately and pass legislation to make DACA the law of the land.
