Rauner bounces safe trampoline law back to legislature

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers will have to try again if they want to add new safety regulations to trampoline parks in the state.

Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed the proposed Safe Trampoline Act.

The idea from state Rep. Robyn Gabel, D-Evanston, was to have the state take charge of safety at the growing number of trampoline parks in Illinois.

Even though state Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, said on Tuesday that there’s no need for the state to do what trampoline park owners are already doing.

“Every single time there is somebody there watching over the kids to make sure it’s done safely,” Ives explained. “There is some much scrutiny because they have huge liabilities if someone were to get seriously injured that the self-regulate. The state doesn’t have to regulate.”

Ives said she’s taken her kids to a trampoline park, and is happy with the safety precautions.

The problem Ives said, is that too many Illinois lawmakers think it’s the government’s job to make sure no one ever gets hurt or takes a chance.

“Many legislators think that the government is the answer to everything,” Ives said. “That the government is there to regulate every activity. To put people to protect them from anything that may do them harm.”

Rauner said he vetoed the plan to spare businesseses from unnecessary burdens.

Messages left for Rep. Gabel were not returned in time to make the story.

Is federal mobilization the answer?

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
