BLOOMINGTON – McLean County health officials say a second mosquito poll has tested positive for West Nile virus.
The mosquito pool was discovered in a trap west of Bloomington. The first came from a trap east of Bloomington.
The county health department says the findings serve as a caution as we approach the Labor Day weekend that will likely include picnics and other outdoor activities. The department encourages anyone outside in the evening hours to wear shoes and socks, long pants and long-sleeved shirts, apply insect repellent that contains DEET and eliminate all sources of standing water that can support mosquito breeding.
McLean is one of 50 Illinois counties that confirmed West Nile virus activity. There are 14 confirmed human cases of the virus in Illinois this year.
The health department said mild cases of WNV can cause a slight fever or headache. Severe infections can lead to high fever, disorientation, and even paralysis or death. Persons at highest risk for serious illness are young children, adults 50 years of age or older and people with compromised immune systems. Anyone concerned about their risk or experiencing symptoms should contact a physician immediately and inform the doctor of any recent mosquito bites.
