SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner has made it official.
He has gone against the political grain and signed an immigration bill, the Trust Act. The legislation prevents law enforcement from detaining individuals strictly based on their immigration status. For Rauner, it’s a matter of family values.
For Rauner, it’s a matter of family values, citing his gransparents who came to the U.S. in the late 1800s.
“My grandparents did not speak English when they were young,” Rauner said. “My grandparents lived in a little double-wide trailer. They had alomost no money, they had some dairy cows and some corn, but they were my best friends growing up. They have me my values. ”
Rauner said the legislation will give immigrants the chance to follow the three keys to success his grandparents always talked about.
“Hard work, working hard for everything that you do, giving 100 percent your best effort, getting a reat education, because education is the key to a better life in every generation and number three, they said ‘Bruce, always give back in your community,’ ” Rauner said.
Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti said the bill does not transform Illinois into a sanctuary state but instead keeps violent criminals behind bars
