NORMAL – The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well at Illinois State University where representatives from Amazon are filming an educational video aimed at inspiring people to start their own small businesses and sell their products on Amazon.

A local woman is one of the entrepreneurs featured in the video, which will be completed later this year.

Kristin Rae is a mother of two who graduated ISU in 2007 with a degree in fashion design.

She’s one of Amazon’s sellers, running a global luggage and apparel business from her laptop while caring for her children in Bloomington-Normal.

“In an area like this that doesn’t typically have large buying teams from these large retailers. You don’t have to live in New York or LA to get exposure. You really can do it just like this in a community just like this,” said Rae.

She sells luggage, apparel, and other products and services for a company she calls Inspire International.

Rae is also an advocate to help other entrepreneurs, and she runs a firm called Valor in which she bids on Department of Defense contracts to provide clothing for military personnel.

The Amazon film crew is spending two days in town.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
