BLOOMINGTON – Bloomington Police have arrested a local man who’s one of four suspects in a Wednesday night armed robbery and carjacking.

McLean County prosecutors have filed several charges against Wanya Sterling, 19, of Bloomington, including armed robbery with a firearm, aggravated robbery, aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, and resisting police.

A 24-year old man told officers he drove to the 1100 of S. Main to give a ride to an acquaintance and another man. One of the men allegedly struck the victim in the head with a handgun and forced him to drive to a nearby location, where two other men entered the car.

They reportedly forced him to drive to several places, stole his wallet and phone, and forced him out of the car. The victim was said to have minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Police said they arrested Sterling after a short foot chase. A judge on Friday set bond at $50,000, meaning he has to post $5,000 to be released from jail while he awaits trial.

Investigators are looking three other men. One of them is believed to be a black male in his 20’s, about 6 feet tall, a thin build, and dreadlock hair. The other two were said to be black males, also in their 20’s.

Anyone with information is asked to call Bloomington Police Det. Maas at 309-434-2434, or send an email to [email protected]. Calls can also be made to McLean County Crime Stoppers at 309-828-1111.

If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
