BLOOMINGTON – Consultants drawing up a master plan for Bloomington parks asked residents to draw up a wish list of amenities for a new recreation center, but not everyone who attended a public meeting at Miller Park Pavilion Thursday night were enthusiastic participants.
Joe Walden of Bloomington spoke out just as consultants asked residents to make a rec center wish list. Walden said there’s a difference between a wish and a need, and he believes providing recreational services is best left to the private sector.
“Four Seasons, rock climbing, we have those things here in Bloomington,” Walden said.
“So, what that is telling me is the city is willing to go into direct competition with private enterprise,” said Walden.
About 50 people showed up for the last of three meetings seeking public input on the master plan. Alderman Jamie Mathy said he was sitting with a group lobbying for another public ice rink.
None of the proposed projects are done deals, according to city parks director Jay Tetzloff.
“Funding is not attached to any of this,” said Tetzloff.
“It’s going to be difficult for Parks and Rec to receive funding through the city,” Tetzloff added.
The favorite amenities among last night’s participants…a multi-purpose room and an industrial kitchen to serve large groups. An indoor playground, walking and jogging track, swimming pool, and ice rink were also on the list.
