NORMAL – The Multicultural Leadership Program awarded a new Alumni Volunteer Leadership Award to three MCLP graduates during its Class of 2018 reception at Heartland Community College’s Astroth Community Education Center.

The three award recipients are Carolyn Davis (MCLP Class of 2011), Leslie Harding (MCLP Class of 2011) and Craig Luchtefeld (MCLP Class of 2012).

Davis served MCLP from 2013-15 as the Curriculum Committee chair. Davis oversaw training logistics and class session delivery for three consecutive program years. This included annual improvements, volunteer coordination, outreach to MCLP alumni and community supporters. She also served MCLP as a past board member and board secretary. Davis is employed at State Farm.

For five years Harding chaired the MCLP graduation committee, organizing the graduation celebration for MCLP class participants and supporters, an annual event seating 300-500 attendees. She also served six years on the MCLP board, actively recruited new participants and serving as treasurer. Harding is employed with the Compass Group – Eurest Dining Services.

Luchtefeld has helped MCLP develop its communications and information management structure. Using his skills as an IT professional, Luchtefeld led the planning and implementation of MCLP’s data management system and web-based functions. He continues to help MCLP meet its IT needs, serving on the MCLP board of directors for five years, currently as board secretary and a member of the Marketing and Technology committee. Luchtefeld is an IT supervisor at Country Financial.

“While the focus of this reception is to welcome the 9th annual class, we are pleased to initiate and include this new award to recognize the support of our alumni volunteers, whose involvement is critical to making our program possible each year,” said MCLP Executive Director Linda Bollivar.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
