PONTIAC – Labor Day is quickly approaching and the Pontiac Area Chamber of Commerce is planning for the community’s biggest parade that weekend.

Executive Director Mindi Terrell said she’s looking for entries for the September 3 Thresherman’s Parade with the theme “100 Years in the Past, 100 Years in the Future”.

“We’ve sent out requests for people to put entries in to the parade. We’ve already got probably 10,” Terrell said. “We have people coming by the office saying they want to be in the parade this year. So, it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Terrell said there won’t be one person presiding over the parade in honorary fashion as usual.

“This year, for the grand marshal, we didn’t choose a single person. What we are doing is we’re going back and inviting all the past grand marshals to participate in the parade this year,” Terrell explained. “So, we’re going to get the Jolly Trolley and have all of them on the Jolly Trolley and use that as our grand marshal this year.”

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
