ALTON – The American Red Cross has an emergency need for blood and platelet donations.

Blood donations have fallen short of hospital needs for the past couple of months, and a Red Cross official says that’s typical for this time of year. Spokesman Joe Zydlo said the process takes an hour or so to complete, and you don’t want to give blood on an empty stomach. He added new donors are always welcome.

“I think for us (the challenge) is trying to find new donors, getting new blood – no pun intended,” Zydlo said. “Hopefully we can retain then and get them to come back another time”

Donation appointments can be quickly and easily scheduled by calling 1-800-RED CROSS or by going to www.redcrossblood.org.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
