URBANA – The man accused of kidnapping a University of Illinois scholar from China has appeared in court for the first time with dozens of people gathered outside.

Brendt Christensen is charged with abducting Yingying Zhang, 26, on June 9. Authorities don’t believe Zhang is alive although she has not been found.

WCIA reports hundreds of people outside the federal courthouse in Urbana, some chanting, “Justice for Yingying.”

Zhang’s father, aunt and boyfriend were in the courtroom for the hearing. Christensen, 26, of Champaign, did not speak other than to say he understood the charges and conversed with his attorney.

Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
