BLOOMINGTON – The local YMCA is offering a chance to teach young children the importance of safety in the water.

The free lessons will be offered from 5:30 p.m. through 7:30 p.m. on June 5-8. The “safety around the water” lessons will be offered to 75 first graders in District 87 who meet the criteria of having free and/or reduced lunch. Bloomington-Normal YMCA Learn-to-Swim Coordinator Mandy Burge explained why it’s so important that kids get their feet wet.

“Swimming is not only a fun, healthy activity, but an important life skill,” Burge said. “Leaning basic water safety skills is a great introduction to the world of swimming that often continues with swim lessons and competitive swim programs.”

Part of National Water Safety Month, the Bloomington-Normal YMCA is encouraging parents to take an active role in fostering a relationship between their children and swimming. Some safety tips include swimming only when there is a lifeguard on duty, being within an arm’s reach of a young child, and not engaging in breath holding activities.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
