NORMAL – Chemberly Cummings took the oath of office on Monday night as she became the first minority council member in the Normal Town Council’s history.
Cummings was sworn in along with returning councilmen Scott Preston, Kevin McCarthy and Mayor Chris Koos. Koos was sworn in as a discovery recount in his narrow win over challenger Marc Tiritilli is scheduled for next week.
“Directly, there’s some things I’d like to see to continue to bring us together as a community to become more one. And then also continue to find more ways to help us grow and be vibrant and become more progressive,” Cummings told news partner WMBD-TV.
Bloomington also swore in two new council members Jamie Mathy and Kimberly Bray along with returning council members Joni Painter and Scott Black.
“I’m happy that the mayor has put a big emphasis on infrastructure, sewers, streets,” Mathy told WMBD-TV. “We’re looking forward to working on that and implementing a lot of projects that need to be fixed in Ward 1.”
The Bloomington City Council has a female majority for the first time.
