SPRINGFIELD – A new and improved version of the “Getting Around Illinois” website offers real-time road conditions and interactive maps for Illinois drivers looking for the easy route to their destination.
The website is mobile-friendly now, so it’ll adapt to an iPad or any device used to access the website, according to Kelsea Gurski, a spokesperson for the Illinois Department of Transportation.
A dynamic, enhanced map allows users to zoom in on their travel route and see what road conditions are ahead, Gurski said. Whether travelers are looking for information on winter road conditions or construction zone sites that might hinder their travel plans during the summer, the website will keep them updated, according to Gurski.
“You can find information about where gas stations and hotels are located along your route,” Gurski said. “You can overlay a weather radar map; you can see what the weather is going to be like on top of your current travel route.”
The website also provides links to other websites that offer travel-related congestion and crash reporting, Gurski said.
“One good example is our ‘Travel Midwest’ website,” Gurski said. “You can access that website through ‘Getting Around Illinois,’ and that provides a quick look at the Chicago area and what traffic congestion is looking like.”
Taxpayers don’t have to worry about footing the bill for the website improvements.
“We used existing resources in-house at IDOT to move the site to the new cloud-based platform, so there was no additional cost to taxpayers to do that,” Gurski said.
