WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said he plans to ask Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch about his independence from the White House if his nomination is confirmed.
“We need to know what you’ll do when you are called upon to stand up to this president or any president if he claims the power to ignore laws that protect fundamental human rights,” Durbin said. “You are going to have your hands full with this president. He is going to keep you busy.”
Durbin said being in lockstep with President Donald Trump would be bad for the high court.
“Make no mistake, when it comes to the treatment of workers, women, victims of discrimination, people of minority religious faith and our Constitution, most Americans questions whether we need a Supreme Court justice with the vision of Donald Trump,” Durbin said.
Durbin is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Gorusch was nominated by President Trump in January to fill a U.S. Supreme Court vacancy caused by the death of Antonin Scalia.
