NORMAL – Illinois State led for all but the first 40 seconds in Sunday’s 84-62 exhibition win over Quincy on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena. MiKyle McIntosh scored a game-high 21 points for the Redbirds, while Andre Washington collected a team-high nine rebounds.
ISU shot 30-for-76 (39.5 percent) from the field, while Quincy countered with a 23-for-65 (35.4 percent) effort. The Redbirds also outrebounded Quincy, 50-44. The Hawks were led offensively by Herm Senor II who scored 16 points.
After Quincy initially took a two-point lead on a Senor II layup, Keyshawn Evans scored back-to-back 3-pointers to put Illinois State on the board. McIntosh extended the Redbird advantage to 8-2 at the 17:51 mark with a pair of free throws. ISU went on to build a 13-4 lead.
Later in the half, after Quincy cut Illinois State’s margin to five, the Redbirds answered with five-straight points, including a steal and fast-break dunk by Madison Williams to make the score 18-8. The Hawks once again pulled within eight points; however, ISU responded with an 11-2 run to take a 17-point advantage, 31-14, on a McIntosh 3-pointer. Quincy ended the first half on an 8-2 run to cut Illinois State’s halftime lead to 46-34. McIntosh led all first-half scorers with 13 points.
The Redbirds outscored the Hawks, 5-0, to start the second half with a McIntosh jumper and a Paris Lee 3-pointer to lift ISU ahead, 51-34, at the 17:48 mark. But, Quincy went on a 12-2 run to pull within 53-46 with 13:24 remaining on a Marcus Hinton 3-pointer. A layup by McIntosh stopped the QU scoring stretch, and the Redbirds later manufactured a 16-4 run, including eight points by Isaac Gassman, to lift ISU ahead by 24 points, 79-55, with 4:17 remaining. Illinois State went on to win, 84-62.
With ISU’s lone exhibition game complete, Illinois State officially tips off the 2016-17 season Friday at 7 p.m. at Murray State in Murray, Kentucky. Fans can listen to the game on WJBC 1230-AM or watch it via the Ohio Valley Conference Digital Network.
