SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Peoria Chiefs scored two runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game but gave up a run in the bottom of the inning to lose in South Bend 4-3 Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Chiefs to 14-14 in the second half and 54-44 overall with two games left in the series.

The Chiefs jumped out to an early lead in the first inning against Casey Bloomquist. With two down in the inning, Dylan Tice jumped all over the first pitch from Bloomquist and hit his first Chiefs home run for a 1-0 lead. Brian O’Keefe singled and made his way to third on a wild pitch and error but was left in scoring position.

South Bend answered against Sandy Alcantara in the second. Andruw Monasterio singled with one out and he scored when Matt Rose double off the center field wall to tie the game. The hosts took the lead in the third inning with help from the Chiefs defense. Carlos Sepulveda singled to center and PJ Higgins hit a little flare to right. Bladimil Franco fell down while attempting to dive and lost his glove as the ball rolled all the way to the wall. Instead of having runners on first and second or getting an out on the play, Alcantara and the Chiefs trailed 2-1.

Alcantara retired South Bend’s top prospect and All-Star Game MVP Eloy Jimenez three times in the game with a pop up to second and two soft groundouts. He gave way to Steven Gallardo in the seventh inning and South Bend took a 3-1 lead on a leadoff home run by Bryant Flete.

The Chiefs tied the game in the eighth against reliever Tanner Griggs. Magneuris Sierra beat out a bunt single and moved to second as Jose Martinez walked. Sierra went to third as Tice reached on a fielders’ choice with Martinez out at second. After O’Keefe popped up, Chris Chinea tied the game with a double down the left-field line.

South Bend regained the lead against Gallardo in the bottom of the inning. Donnie Dewees led off with a single to center and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw by Gallardo. With one out, Alberto Mineo singled to right for a 4-3 South Bend lead. The Chiefs got a runner on in the ninth but Sierra struck out swinging to end the game.

Alcantara allowed two runs on six hits over six innings while walking one and striking out five. Gallardo (1-2) allowed two runs on three hits over two innings.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
