PEORIA – The Peoria Chiefs allowed five runs in the top of the first inning and fell to the Clinton LumberKings 5-2 Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Chiefs to 4-7 in the second half and 44-37 overall as Clinton takes the series, winning two out of three.

Dailyn Martinez made his Chiefs debut as the starting pitcher and didn’t get out of the first inning as Clinton scored five runs on five hits and two walks. Alex Jackson singled with the bases loaded for a 1-0 lead and Logan Taylor doubled home two more. After the first out of the inning, Chris Mariscal gave Clinton a 4-0 lead with a groundout to third. James Alfonso doubled home Taylor for a 5-0 lead before Ricky Eusebio walked. Nick Frey came out of the bullpen and got out of the inning but the Chiefs were down 5-0.

Peoria didn’t scored against Nick Neidert until the eighth inning. Leo Pina led off with a long solo home run to left-center, his first home run of the season. Brian O’Keefe, who entered the game in the second when Dylan Becker was ejected, followed with a home run of his own to cut the Clinton lead to 5-2. But the only base runner the Chiefs got the rest of the way was on a dropped pop up in the ninth as Clinton won 5-2.

Martinez (0-1) took the loss allowing five runs on five hits and two walks over 2/3 of an inning while also committing a balk. Frey allowed one hit over 3 1/3 shutout innings while striking out five. Jorge Rodriguez allowed three hits over three shutout innings while striking out three. Steven De La Cruz allowed one hit over two shutout innings while striking out two.

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
