BELOIT, Wisc. – The Peoria Chiefs scored eight runs over the final two innings and three pitchers combined to shutout the Beloit Snappers 11-0 Thursday night. The win ends a four-game losing streak and moves the Chiefs to 3-5 in the second half and 43-35 on the season as they back to Peoria for a seven-game homestand.

Ryan Helsley was a late scratch and Harley Holt made his first start of the season for the Chiefs. He got out of a first and third, nobody out jam in the third inning and handed the ball to Luke Harrison with a runner on base and two outs in the fourth. Harrison escaped that jam and blanked the Snappers over the next three innings.

The Chiefs broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning against reliever Rob Huber. Jose Godoy doubled, Thomas Spitz walked and RJ Dennard walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, Godoy scored on a wild pitch and Vaughn Bryan doubled to left-center to put the Chiefs on top 3-0.

Peoria broke the game open in the eighth inning against Dustin Driver. Dennard led off with a double to left and moved to third on a wild pitch with one out. Bryan walked and with two down Edmundo Sosa walked to load the bases. Eli Alvarez singled to left to score Dennard and Bryan for a 5-0 Chiefs lead and Chris Chinea singled to load the bases. Sosa scored on a wild pitch for a 6-0 lead and Godoy reached on an infield single for a 7-0 lead.

Beloit infielder Michael Soto took over on the mound for the ninth inning and the Chiefs put the finishing touches on their blowout. Dennard tripled off the right-field wall and with two outs Craig Aikin drew a walk. Sosa singled home Dennard for an 8-0 lead and Alvarez launched a three-run homer for an 11-0 final score.

Holt allowed five hits over 3 2/3 shutout innings while striking out three in a no-decision. Harrison (3-1) picked up the win with 3 1/3 shutout innings as he allowed two hits, walked three and struck out two. Rodriguez allowed one hit and hit a batter over two shutout innings.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
