Chiefs beat Bees again

Burlington, IA – The Peoria Chiefs rallied past the Burlington Bees for the second straight night with a 6-4 win on Saturday. The win moves the Chiefs to 2-1 in the second half, 11-3 against Burlington this season and a season-best 11 games over .500 at 42-31.

The Chiefs fell behind early as Burlington jumped on All-Star Ryan Helsley in the bottom of the first. Jake Yacinich led off with a single and moved to second on a single by Michael Hermosillo. Yacinich scored on a single by Brendon Sanger and Hermosillo came home on a wild pitch for a 2-0 Bees lead.

Peoria answered immediately against Jose Rodriguez in the second. With two outs, RJ Dennard reached on an error and scored on a double by Luis Pina. Thomas Spitz singled to left and Pina raced home ahead of the throw to tie the game 2-2.

With the game still tied in the fifth, the Chiefs took the lead against Rodriguez. Pina drew a lead off walk and scored on a triple by Spitz for a 3-2 lead. Spitz scored on an error by Walsh at first for a 4-2 lead before Rodriguez got out of the inning.

Burlington got a run back against reliever Jorge Rodriguez in the seventh. With one out Tanner Lubach doubled to left and he moved to third on an infield single by Angelo Amendolare. Yacinich singled to right to plate Lubach and cut the Chiefs lead to 4-3. Stephen De La Cruz came out of the Chiefs bullpen and recorded two straight flyouts to keep the Chiefs on top.

The Chiefs added insurance runs in the top of the ninth against lefty Winston Lavendier. Spitz led off with a single and Craig Aikin reached as Lavendier booted his sac bunt for an error. Edmundo Sosa singled to center to score Spitz and Aikin came home on a wild throw to third by Hermosillo. With a 6-3 lead, Alvarez drew a walk but Burlington escaped the inning with a fielders’ choice, pop up and groundout.

Burlington did not go quietly in the ninth against reliever Nick Frey. Michael Pierson led off with a walk and Lubach singled to left. Amendolare drew a walk to load the bases and Pierson scored on a groundout to cut the Chiefs lead to 6-4. Hermosillo hit into a fielders’ choice to third as Pina threw out Lubach at the plate for the second out. Frey got Sanger on a grounder to third to end the game as he earned his third save of the season.

Helsley (8-1) allowed two runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings to earn the win. He struck out five and walked three. Rodriguez allowed one run on three hits over one inning while striking out two. De La Cruz retired all five batters he faced over 1 2/3 innings with one strikeout. Frey allowed one run on one hit and two walks in one innings while striking out one.

 

Notes…Helsley has won eight straight decisions…He allowed his first earned run since June 1, a span of 18 1/3 innings…He had not allowed an earned run against Burlington in three starts this season, covering 17 2/3 innings…Helsley has gone at least five innings in all 13 starts this season and this was his 11th straight start allowing two earned runs or less…He passed Brendan Leitao by 1/3 of an inning for the team lead in innings pitched at 76 1/3…Helsley is tied with Sandy Alcantara for second in the MWL at 83 strikeouts…Frey has saves in consecutive games, the first Chiefs pitcher to accomplish that feat in 2016…Sosa tied a career and season high with four this…The Chiefs have five 4-hit games this season and Sosa has three of them…Spitz has back-to-back two-RBI games…Alvarez has reached base in 26 straight games…De La Cruz leads the MWL with 26 appearances…The Chiefs are 11-3 against Burlington this season…Of the 14 games, 13 have been decided by two runs or less and the chiefs are 10-3 in those games…Burlington committed five errors Saturday…The series concludes at 2:00 p.m. Sunday as the Chiefs send RH Junior Fernandez (5-4, 2.97) to the mound against Bees RH Jaime Barria (6-4, 3.84)…The broadcast can be heard, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 6:15 p.m. on www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive which also has downloads for a free app on the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android…The broadcast is also available on the Peoria Chiefs Network in the Tune-In Radio App.
