BLOOMINGTON – Police officers in Bloomington and Normal are camped out atop the two Dunkin’ Donuts locations in the Twin Cities to raise money for Special Olympics.

Bloomington officer Todd Keil is taking part in BPD’s 15th annual Cop on Top fundraiser for the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run at the Bloomington location, 2306 E. Oakland Ave., while Normal Police officers are taking part for the third year at the Normal location, 1603 N. Main St.

“Summer games comes up this weekend, with the torch run, the final leg coming up on Friday night, and for opening ceremonies and these athletes who participate all weekend,” Keil said. “It really gives them an experience that they get to enjoy.”

The officers hope to raise a combined $20,000.

Officers will be handing out free donuts at both locations. Donors who give at least $10 will get a free coffee mug.

Radio Bloomington stations B-104 and WBNQ are holding hourly auctions as they broadcast live from both locations.

Keil added the Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest donor to Special Olympics.

“Last year in Illinois alone we donated over $4 million back to Special Olympics,” Keil said. “That was raised from grass roots efforts by police officers in Central Illinois.”

Bloomington and Normal police officers will be hosting the fundraiser until 6 p.m.

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
