BLOOMINGTON – The Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts is kicking off its 10th anniversary season this weekend.

The 2016 schedule includes comedian Louie Anderson, the Oak Ridge Boys and the Happy Together Tour that features six iconic pop groups from the 1960s and 70s, plus the sketch comedy show ‘Unelectable You’ and the Beatles tribute band American English.

Director Tina Salamone told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin the BCPA is bringing back a Family Day event on July 16 after being on hiatus for several years.

PODCAST: Listen to Scott’s interview with Salamone on WJBC.

“We we will have games, bucket truck drives, perhaps animals from the zoo, all kids of things,” Salamone said.

The Bloomington Beer Fest has been moved up to June 16-17, Father’s Day Weekend, after being held in August previously.

“We jumped into the Bloomington Beer Fest last year out of neceessity and had the only date on the calendar we were holding for that,” Salamone said. “We’ve put our into June so we can have a little distance between Medici’s beer tasting in July and Bruegala in August.”

Bruegela moved from BCPA to the Corn Crib in Normal last year.

The first show is Friday with country music up-and-comer Maggie Rose.

Tickets for all other shows go on sale June 2. Ticket information is available at artsblooming.org.

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
