GENEVA – The Peoria Chiefs won their fifth game in a row as the pitching staff did not allow an earned run in a 5-3 victory of the Kane County Cougars on Wednesday afternoon. The win ensures the Chiefs of their fourth straight series win and moves their record to 20-18 with one game left on a season-long 10-game road trip.
For the second game in a row the Chiefs jumped out to an early lead, this time in the second inning. Chris Chinea drew a leadoff walk from Cody Reed and R.J. Dennard singled to left. With one out, Thomas Spitz reached on an infield single to load the bases and Leo Pina put the Chiefs on top with a single to right. After a strikeout, Magneuris Sierra singled to center to plate two more runs and give the Chiefs a 3-0 lead.
Reed was knocked from the game in the third inning as the Chiefs added to the lead. Eli Alvarez led off with a single and Chinea walked again before being thrown out at second as Alvarez took third on an attempted double steal. Dennard doubled off the wall to score Alvarez and with the game at 4-0 the Cougars went to the bullpen. Gabriel Moya got two straight outs to prevent the Chiefs from adding on.
Kane County scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth after a walk from Jake Woodford and an error by Pina. The Chiefs answered in the seventh inning against reliever Keegan Long. Edmundo Sosa led off with an infield single and scored from second on a one-out double to left by Chinea. The double extended Chinea’s hit streak to 10 games as he provided a RBI for the second day in a row.
The Cougars rallied with two unearned runs in the seventh inning against Tyler Bray. Jason Morozowski was hit by a pitch with one out and Galil Cribbs reached on an error by Chinea at first base. Trevor Mitsui singled home Morozowski before Bray struck out Joe Munoz. Eduardo de Oleo was hit by a pitch to load the bases and another error by Pina scored Cribbs to cut the Chiefs lead to 5-3. With the bases still loaded, Brey struck out Luis Veras to end the inning.
Woodford (2-3) earned the win has he allowed one unearned run on six hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out three. Bray allowed two unearned runs on one hit as he hit two batters and struck out two in his lone inning of work. Brady Bowen allowed a hit over a shutout inning in his Chiefs debut. Stephen De La Cruz earned his first save of the season as he struck out one and allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth inning.
