BLOOMINGTON – A traffic stop by McLean County sheriff’s deputies ended up resulting in a large crystal meth bust.
Sheriff Jon Sandage said deputies had stopped a vehicle for speeding near Saybrook and noticed the passengers were extremely nervous.
“Our K-9 unit was called in and did a free air sniff of the vehicle, which alerted to the presence of narcotics,” said Sandage. “After a search of the vehicle was done, 250 grams of crystal meth were located in the vehicle.”
Sandage said Shawn Castleman, 35, and Mellissa Coffin, 28, were arrested and are being charged with meth trafficking and possession of meth with intent to deliver. The meth has a value of $30,000.
“This methamphetamine was crystal, which is a more potent, truer form of methamphetamine, different than what we see that is sometimes cooked in the area,” said Sandage. “This was out of Mexico and was transported from Atlanta, Ga.
“It’s a lot. It’s definitely more than what we’ve seen of any type of methamphetamine, especially the crystal.”
Sandage added the investigation is ongoing and there is a potential of more people being charged.
