PEORIA – The Peoria Chiefs were blown out by the Bowling Green Hot Rods 11-2 on Wednesday afternoon in front of the largest crowd of the season. The loss drops the Chiefs into last place in the Western Division at 10-16 on the season.
Bowling Green jumped all over Chiefs starter Sandy Alcantara in the top of the first inning. Jake Cronenworth led off with a single and stole second before Kevin Padlo walked. Michael Russell singled to load the bases and Alcantara struck out Manny Sanchez for the first out. Brandon Low put the Hot Rods on the board with a three-run triple to right field and Alcantara’s afternoon was over. Jorge Rodriguez came out of the bullpen to make his Chiefs debut and Daniel De La Calle greeted him with a RBI single for a 4-0 lead as Low scored.
The Chiefs left runners at second and third in the first inning before scoring against Henry Centeno in the second. Chris Chinea led off with a double to left and Vaughn Bryan beat out an infield single to put runners on the corners. An errant pickoff throw by Centeno allowed Chinea to score and Bryan came home on a one-out groundout off the bat of Craig Aikin as the Chiefs cut the deficit to 4-2.
Bowling Green pushed the lead back to four in the fourth inning as Cronenworth singled and Kevin Padlo unloaded a two-run homer through the wind and into the left-field berm. With a 6-2 lead the Hot Rods added on against Rodriguez in the fifth on doubles by Brandon Low and Zacrey Law.
The Hot Rods kept scoring as they loaded the bases in the sixth and Tyler Bray walked De La Calle to force home a run. In the eighth they plated three more on a single by Low and a two-run homer from Peter Maris for an 11-2 lead. Chiefs third baseman Dylan Becker pitched the ninth inning and was the only Peoria hurler not to allow a run on Wednesday.
Alcantara (3-1) took the loss allowing four runs on three hits and a walk in just 1/3 of an inning, the first Chiefs game this year in which the starter did not go five innings. Rodriguez allowed three runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings while striking out three in his Chiefs debut. Bray allowed four runs on six hits over three innings while walking two and striking out one. Becker allowed two singles in a scoreless ninth inning.
