NORMAL – A freshman mentoring program at Normal West High School hopes to make a big splash at a new fundraiser next week.

A color splash 5K run at Parkside Junior High in Normal at 8:30 a.m. Saturday is a run in which participants get splashed with colored powder along the route. The money aims to help ensure the program can avoid budget cuts due to the uncertainty in state funding.

Senior Mentor Sara Verda said the program helped her greatly coming from Trinity Lutheran School in Bloomington where she was in an 8th grade graduating class of 29.

“Coming to West was obviously a huge change,” Verda said.

Verda said she has noticed a big difference in the freshmen she mentored.

“It’s great to look back and think , these kids didn’t even talk to me at first,” Verda said.

Senior Hailey Wickenhauser said her time with the freshman mentoring program has been rewarding.

“Just to see some of them who don’t come from very much or don’t think they can accomplish what they end up accomplishing with some help is nice to see,” Wickenhauser said.

Mentors help freshman with homework and the basics of how to get around the school, in ways to made high school less intimidating. The program relies on some teacher involvement and supplies, which could be cut as state funding remains uncertain.

Jason Klokkenga is lead teacher for the mentoring program. He said the role of the mentor is to help their younger schoolmates make friends and feel more comfortable at school.

“(Mentors) are going to make you stick out a little bit, but in a positive way,” Klokkenga said.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
