SPRINGFIELD – A job once deemed so boring an elected official once quit less than halfway through his term is still important enough to lawmakers that they voted to keep it around.

The Illinois Senate voted down a proposal on Thursday to send a question the fall ballot if the Lieutenant Governor’s Office should be abolished. The savings is seen at $1.6 million a year.

Sen. Tom Cullerton a Villa Park Democrat, hears from all sides about the office.

“Truthfully, as I go around my district and as I have heard talking points, both Republican and Democratic groups that I talk to, everyone consistently still tells me ‘Why do we still have a lieutenant governor?,’ Cullerton asked.

Who would step up to fill the role of governor if something should happen to that individual while in office? The current proposal suggested that the attorney general be next in line.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
