BLOOMINGTON – People needing guidance on how to manage their money won’t have to spend any to get some financial tips during Money Smart Week.

Travis Huber, Associate Director of Research and Effectiveness with Heartland Community College’s Continuing Education told WJBC’s Scott Laughlin there are more than 70 seminars available throughout Bloomington-Normal starting Saturday.

“You can learn about Social Security if you are a first-time homeowner, there are some new homeowner classes on what to look out for, what do to if you are selling a house,” Huber said.

The seminars will be led by financial experts, lawyers and instructors from Heartland and the University of Illinois Extension.

“They are volunteering their time,” Huber said. “It’s really hard to talk to a lawyer for free so you can take advantage of that.”

All sessions are free, but preregistration is recommended.

More information is available on the Money Smart Week Bloomington-Normal Facebook page and MoneySmartWeek.org.

Money Smart Week is a national campaign created by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago in 2002. This is the ninth year there’s been local participation.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
