NORMAL – Unit 5 seems to have found a way to plug its current transportation fund deficit, but the problem that created the gap in the first place doesn’t seem to be going away.
The district has said lack of funding from the state is what caused the deficit. Although the governor has proposed increasing funding for schools, that doesn’t include more money for transportation.
“Everything that we’ve heard on the increases has been more around the education fund in general and then special education,” Unit 5 Finance Director Marty Hickman said.
Hickman added there really is not really an increase in transportation funding in site. He said expenses will continue to go up and if the state continues to not provide more money it will make things difficult in the future.
