KENOSHA- A consistent scoring attack was able to propel the Illinois Wesleyan Titans to their second consecutive CCIW win Saturday night. The Red Men of Carthage were the recipient of the 69-60 domination by the Titans.

IWU took the lead early, but the two teams would go point-for-point over first few minutes. The game of runs would come into play next, as the Titans would double up the Red Men at 12-6, immediately followed by a 7-3 run for Carthage to make it 15-13 near the midway point of the first half.

A Trevor Seibring lay up would break the run for the Red Men, and begin a run for the Titans which didn’t stop until the buzzer sounded for the halftime break. Seibring and Joel Pennington had the majority of the points during the run, in which Carthage was only able to hit only three shots from the field over the final 10:18 of the first half.

Seibring’s nine points led the Titans to a 30-19 lead at the halftime break.

The second half looked to be dominated by IWU, as they quickly picked up where they left off. The Titans would go up by 15 early on in the second half before Carthage was able to get on the board. The Red Men would put up a fight throughout most of the second half though, pulling to single digits near the midway point of the half.

Bryce Dolan would bury a three pointer soon after that point to put the Titans back up by more than 10, a mark that would stand for the majority of the rest of the game. Carthage would drop the lead below double digits only one more time towards the final minute of the contest, but IWU would hold off for the victory.

Dolan would finish up leading the Titans in the score-book with 14 points. Seibring and Joel Pennington would join him in double digits with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
