BLOOMINGTON – It’s now October and that means it’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Director of Countering Domestic Violence at Mid Central Community Action Senna Adjabeng said they have a series of events planned to recognize the month and create awareness, such as the Domestic Violence Awareness Training Workshop.

“That is more of a condensed version of our 40 hour domestic violence training,” said Adjabeng. “We’re hoping that we will be able to educate the public and professionals about the dynamics of domestic violence.

“We also will be talking about the effects of domestic violence on children, because that’s an important piece, and then we have one of our advocates who has a story to share about her experience with domestic violence.”

The workshop is open to the public and will take place Oct. 16 at the Bloomington Public Library from noon-4 p.m.

Adjabeng said there’s also the Purple Purse Challenge, which is taking place through Oct. 27.

“It’s to raise funds and awareness for our Neville House Shelter and services,” said Adjabeng. “The challenge is an online fundraiser, but one of the main topics that they raise is financial empowerment for women.”

To donate to the Purple Purse Challenge, head to www.crowdrise.com/MidCentralCommunityAction.

Residents can also take part in the cell phone drive until the end of December. The public can donate cell phones to be used as part of a 911 Safety Plan or recycled for Client Assistance funds.

Adjabeng hoped October will help create more conversation about domestic abuse and develop a greater understanding for what its victims are going through.

Labor Day – Expanding voting rights for all

By Mike Matejka Because of COVID, there is no Labor Day Parade this year.  It’s always a great event for our everyday workers to march proudly down the street and enjoys the festive crowd. If there had been a parade, this year’s Labor Day theme was to be “150 years of struggle: your right to vote.” …

Is federal mobilization the answer?

By Mike Matejka As President Donald Trump threatens to send federal marshals into Chicago, over the objections of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, recall another Illinois Governor who protested the incursion of armed federal personnel into the city.   Those federal troops, rather than calming, escalated the situation, leading to deaths and violence. Illinois poet Vachel Lindsay…

In these troubled times, to my fellow white Americans

By Mike Matejka Our nation is at a unique watershed in human relations. African-Americans have been killed too many times in the past before George Floyd, but the response to this man’s death is international and all-encompassing. I was a grade-schooler during the Civil Rights 1960s. I watched Birmingham demonstrators hosed and the Selma – Montgomery…

Workers’ Memorial Day – Remember those whose job took their life

Looking around our community, when we say employer, most will respond to State Farm, Country, or Illinois State University.   We too often forget those who are building our roads, serving our food, or our public employees. COVID-19 has made us more aware of the risk.  Going to work every day for some people means…
